Rumor: Quentin Tarantino Working On A Spaghetti Western?

Here is what we know so far, and keep in mind this is all rumors and nothing is set in stone yet.

1. Speaking recently at the Los Angeles Italia festival where his latest effort, Pasquale Squitieri‘s “Father” made its world premiere, Italian actor Franco Nero revealed his next project is a spaghetti western boasting some intriguing names including Quentin Tarantino, who is a huge fan of the genre.

2. Speculation was “The film will be called ‘The Angel, The Bad And The Wise’ and is a tribute to Sergio Leone. It’s a movie that contains humor, lots of action, but also a great plot”. Rumor now is the title is way off, but the rest could be true.

3. It’s definitely not an adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s 40 LASHES LESS ONE, this one Tarantino’s camp confirmed yesterday.

Inglourious Basterds passes $100 million overseas

A month after its launch, Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” is showing no signs of running out of steam — particularly on the foreign front.

“Basterds” has turned out to be a sturdy foreign performer, this week becoming the 16th pic this year to go past the $100 million mark in international B.O. After bowing in 36 markets, the Nazi-hunting tale still has 26 territories in which to open, including Israel, Lebanon, Singapore and Spain this weekend.

After nearly a month in theaters, “Basterds” has topped $105 million domestically and finished third last weekend.

Tarantino has continued to promote the pic and received a warm response after introducing it at the Israeli premiere in Tel Aviv on Tuesday. Haaretz.com headlined, “Israelis Go Wild for Tarantino’s ‘Inglourious Basterds.’ ”

Producer Lawrence Bender and Austrian thesp Christoph Waltz, who portrays the pic’s key villain, also attended.

France has been the top “Basterds” territory so far with $18.9 million, followed by Germany with $17.3 million, the U.K. with $15.7 million, Australia with $9 million and Russia with $5.9 million.

Universal Pictures Intl. began the foreign marketing campaign with the world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May and a focus on the international cast and storyline. Besides Waltz, cast includes French actress Melanie Laurent and German thesps Michael Fassbender and Diane Kruger.

Universal and the Weinstein Co. are equal partners on “Basterds,” with TWC handling domestic and U overseas. Italy opens on Oct. 2, Brazil and Mexico on Oct. 9, South Korea on Oct. 29 and Japan on Nov. 20.

“Basterds” will soon become the top Tarantino performer on both the international and domestic fronts. “Pulp Fiction” cumed $106 million internationally and $107.9 million domestically; “Kill Bill Vol. 1” cumed $110.9 million internationally vs. a domestic total of $70.1 million, while “Vol. 2″ grossed $86 million overseas vs. $66.2 million domestically.

Inglourious Basterds off to a Good start in Europe

Variety is reporting that “Inglourious Basterds” is off to a good start in Europe, scoring the best opening day ever in France for a Quentin Tarantino pic with a Wednesday gross of $1.4 million from 499 playdates.

Universal Pictures Intl. also opened the film in Belgium and French-speaking Switzerland to best-ever numbers for Tarantino. Pic also finished No. 1 in Australia, where it opened Thursday, grossing $490,000 from 201.

“Basterds,” about a tough band of soldiers who slip into Germany to battle Nazis, kicks into high gear Friday, when it opens in 3,165 theaters domestically. The Weinstein Co., U’s partner on the film, is domestic distrib. Overseas, the pic rolls out into a total of 2,620 playdates in 22 territories, including the U.K. and Germany.

Film’s international cast includes Brad Pitt, who is the linchpin of the domestic marketing campaign. The Weinstein Co. believes Pitt will expose Tarantino to a broader audience.

“Basterds” has a shot at scoring Tarantino his best opening, either meeting or surpassing the $25.1 million earned by “Kill Bill Vol. 2.” Film is tracking well among men of all ages, but the Weinstein Co. hopes to reach women as well.

“Basterds,” which premiered in May at the Cannes Film Festival, cost $70 million to produce before tax credits.
